The Amazing Juggling Wetterling

Filed under: State Politics, Senate 2006 — Ben Thome @ 12:34

On Friday, Wetterling officially announced her candidacy for Mark Kennedy’s current House seat in the 6th Congressional District.  She will oppose Elwyn Tinklinberg who has vowed to stay firm in the race.   While this is probably the “best” move for her, it certainly isn’t a good proposition.  It weakens the DFL in a race that was going to be a difficult win for them to begin with.  Now she and Tinklenberg will have a hard fought primary that will likely choose her out of name-recognition rather than any strong platform.  She’s a weak candidate politically, but she’s a strong candidate personally.  Will that be enough to defeat the Republican oppositon?  Krinkie, Knobloch and Bachman are viing for this position.  Knobloch will likely get the nod, though Krinkie is popular with anti-tax Republicans.  Bachman is a long shot.

A battle between Knobloch and Wetterling would be tough, but I think Knobloch as popular as he is in the area would win with a comfortable lead.
